Educated at Bethelem (Pa.) Prep and Lehigh. Mining engineer and business executive. Came to Alabama after graduation from college, worked as engineer on Dauphin Island RR bridge project, then for Sloss Co. at Brookwood Mine, becoming Superintendent. Met his first wife when she was visiting her sister, Major E.M. Tutwiler's wife, at Coalburg. When Sloss Co. turned down coal lands he had evaluated in Blount Co., Ala., he bought them and set up Lehigh Coal Co. with backing from J. A. Rutherfurd, one of the Sloss directors. Engaged in mining and other business activities with his brother-in-law, Major Tutwiler.
