The title "Col." comes from M. Lummis' file; I do not know the basis for it.
His will (Fluvanna WB4 p172-173;VSL Reel 12) is unrevealing but raises a puzzle or two. It is dated 23 Feb 1838, apparently in Fluvanna, which is elsewhere given as the date of his death in Richmond, recorded Fluvanna (NEED DATE). Refers only to his "Several children," unnamed, and similarly unnamed wife. Executors include B.H. Magruder. The accounts for sale of his personal property 20-21 Nov 1838 are recorded in WB4 p208-215, and further accounts of his Administrators are in the same Book at pp 251-253 (31 Mar 1840) and 371-373 (28 June 1844). The 1838 sale brought $14,606.61; big buyers included James M. Strange, Mary B. Strange, and Neil B. Gay.

HOWEVER, I found on microfilm in Va. State Library (perhaps F232 F6A5 1953, Va. Circuit Ct. 29th Circ., Index to Register of certificates of marriages solemnized from 1781 to 1853, and marriage bonds, 1777 to 1851, for Fluvanna County, Va.) a certificate dated 19 Dec 1816 signed by "Jesse Butler P.M.E.C." stating that he had on 23 Apr 1816 married Gideon A. Strange and Harriet Magruder "According to the rites and ceremonies of the Methodist Episcopal Church whereof I am a member." The same certificate lists two other couples he had married that year, one on 14 Sep and one on 5 Nov, so perhaps "April" was a transcription error for "August" in his notes.
Mayer ("Extraneus") reports birth 1797, death 1829/30 with ambiguous citations. Juanita Alloway 12 Feb 1993 reports birth 1796, death abt 1829 with no citation.
