Notes for Joseph Rayner Priestley
BB etc.
!Joseph Rayner Priestley was apparently less than six months old when he sailed for America with his parents. He grew up in Pennsylvania, and may have remained in America when his parents and siblings returned to England about 1810. In late 1815 he was in Birmingham (England), but apparently associated with a retail business in Reading (Pennsylvania), and engaged to his future bride whose home was in that city. He had just sailed for America, after having been with his family near Birmingham, when his mother fell suddenly ill and died in May 1816.
Mr. Priestley seems to have lived in Reading until 1819, and thereafter in Northumberland. He was Cashier of the Bank of Northumberland from its inception in 1831 until his death, which occurred by reason of a heart attack while standing in line for a railroad ticket in Reading. He devoted a great deal of effort throughout his life to the management of his father's and his sisters' financial interests in Pennsylvania.
