DEATH OF PROF J. F. CAREY AT LA JOLLA
The funeral of Prof Joseph Fletcher Carey, whose death occurred at his
home at La Jolla yesterday morning, will be held tomorrow afternoon with
services at 2 o'clock at the First Baptist church, this city. Interment
will be at Mt. Hope.
Prof. Carey has been an invalid for several years. He was born in New York
City Nov. 26, 1823, and was graduate of Union colege afterward affiliating
with the Philomathean society. He made teaching his life work, residing for
some years at Greenbush, N.Y.
After leaving Greenbush he taught at various eastern towns, becoming
professor of Greek and Latin in Michigan state normal school, Ypsilanti,
Michigan in 1867. He has lived in San Diego since 1894. His widow and six
children survive him. A son J. F. Carey, Jr., is a civil engineer of this city.
