Notes for Mary Bowie
Birth, death dates from ACGS YB XLIII (1959) p. 16, and will.
Her will (Fluvanna Co. W.B. 1, p. 259; Microfilm #JR967) dated 1 Aug 1800, entered for probate 28 May 1804, Court of Quarterly Sessions, Fluvanna Co., Va.
Wit. John & Horace Timberlake, John Howard. John B. Magruder exectr.
Names son John Bowie Magruder, dtr Rachael wife of Robert Thrift, dtr Mary Boyd, dtrs Elizabeth, Sarah, and Anna. Leaves named slaves to JBM and RT for specific terms after which they are to be freed, and any children of them to be freed at age 35. Leaves JBM "my Desk and great Bible, and a Silver Watch now in his possession which was formerly the property of his Father, and the rent of the Land and Plantation which I hold in the State of Maryland which may become due for that particular year in which my decease may Happen; And whereas a contract is existing between my said Son and myself, by which I am entitled during life to the benefit of the Land and Plantation whereon I now live in the County of Fluvanna (the legal title wherereof is vested in my sd Son), for which he pays me an annual rent..." she forgives him the rent for the year of her death. Leaves dtr MB her wearing apparel. Other dtrs are "amply provided for" already. Rest of estate to be divided between JBM and RT; if either dies without issue before division, survivor to take all.
W. W. Bowie says ("Bowies and Their Kindred", Washington 1899, p.27) that she received only personal property in her father's will written 29 Nov 1752 (probate Feb 1753), but her husband James Magruder was named co-guardian of testator's children. But WW Bowie believes her husband was James M. (1721-1773), s. of James M. b.1699, gdson of Alexander M. the Emigrant. Most authorities say he was James M. (abt 1717-abt 1790) son of Ninian M. (d. abt 1791), as shown here.
